Milestone ages, done properly

The 18ths, 21sts, 40ths, 50ths and the big ones after 70 are when families go all out, and the banner tends to be the first thing guests photograph. Make the age the largest element by a distance. The name can sit underneath it, and a short line such as "Happy 60th, Grandad" reads well from a car pulling up outside.

Photo banners need the original files. A picture saved from a group chat or lifted off social media has already been shrunk, and that shows once it is stretched to six feet wide. Go back to the camera roll, or scan old prints properly. One photo per decade works nicely for a 40th or 50th: for a Marple 40th, say, a 6ft x 3ft (1829 x 914 mm) banner over the garage door with ten snaps running across it soon has guests stopping on the drive.

Hanging it at home or at a Manchester venue

At home the usual spots are the front door, the garden fence and the back wall of the lounge or marquee. If it stays outside for a weekend of drizzle, go for metal eyelets and hemmed edges, and add a bag of cable ties so the fixings arrive in the same box.

Hired rooms are fussier. Function rooms and pubs rarely want screws or nails in their walls, so plan on removable hooks or tape through the eyelets, and measure the space above the top table before you choose. The longest size, 13ft 1in x 3ft 3in (4000 x 1000 mm), is wider than plenty of hall walls.
