About this product

This is a door plate, sized to be read up close. The biggest version, 297 × 100 mm, reads from about 4 metres, which is right for a corridor where people walk past a row of doors looking for the one they want.

Schools and offices in Manchester

A secondary school in Droylsden has its admin office halfway along the main corridor, among classrooms, the head's office and the staff room. Visitors sign in at reception and are told "second door on the left", then walk past it. A 297 × 100 mm plate on the admin door makes it stand out from the classrooms. A haulage depot, a business centre with shared offices or a sports club's clubhouse would put one on the office door for the same reason.

Think about where the door opens

The trap here is fixing the plate to a door that spends all day propped open against a corridor wall. Once it is open, the plate faces the wall and disappears. If the door is usually open, fit the plate on the wall beside the frame instead, at the same height, so it can be read whatever the door is doing.

Pick a size people can read from where they will stand. As a cautious rule, using the distance-factor method in ISO 3864-1, allow roughly 1 metre of reading distance per 25 mm of sign height (measured on the shorter side). Check it against your own risk assessment.
