About this product

A working garage throws out a surprising mix: used filters, pads, wipers, plastic trim, containers of old fluids. Some of it is recyclable, some of it is classed as hazardous, and almost none of it belongs in the general skip.

A Greater Manchester MOT centre

Imagine an MOT and service centre in Denton with four ramps and a yard out the back. Under pressure, mechanics drop a used filter in the nearest open container. A sign above each waste bay, at the height of a person carrying something, makes the right bay obvious from the ramps.

The mistake is treating "automotive waste" as one stream. Oils, batteries and filters are usually handled separately. Pick a size people can read from where they will stand. As a cautious rule, using the distance-factor method in ISO 3864-1, allow roughly 1 metre of reading distance per 25 mm of sign height (measured on the shorter side). Check it against your own risk assessment.
