About this product

The wording is precise on purpose. It does not ban pets from the whole site, only from the athletic field areas. That makes it fair to dog walkers and easier to enforce.

A Bolton college athletics field, Greater Manchester

Imagine a college in Bolton whose athletics field sits inside a wider park used by dog walkers all day. Javelin and discus areas, a long jump pit and a grass track are no place for a loose dog, for the dog's sake as much as the athletes'. Signs at each opening onto the field, facing outwards, mark the boundary.

The mistake is putting the signs at the park gates. Walkers then think the whole park is closed to dogs and ignore the rule as unreasonable. Fix them where the athletic area actually begins.

The college or landowner decides where pets are allowed.

Board and size

Dibond is the right outdoor board for permanent boundary signs. Correx works for a sports day, when a temporary area is fenced off. 5mm Foamex suits a sheltered gate. A3 reads from about 12 m; A2, roughly 17 m, across a boundary path. Schools and clubs get 10 % off every order. Prices start at £26.55.

Production is 5 working days, followed by a tracked courier, normally 1 to 3 working days. Delivery is £7.95, free once goods pass £100. Add "Assistance dogs excepted" or opening times through typesetting at £15; a person checks the layout. Collect from our Manchester office, Unit 3, 116 Bury New Road, M8 8EB, after we email that it is ready. More school and community signs. Choose a size.

What size should I order?

Pick a size people can read from where they will stand. As a cautious rule, using the distance-factor method in ISO 3864-1, allow roughly 1 metre of reading distance per 25 mm of sign height (measured on the shorter side). Check it against your own risk assessment.

Size	Can be read from about
A3 (297 × 420 mm)	12 m
A2 (420 × 594 mm)	17 m
A1 (594 × 841 mm)	24 m

Good lighting stretches the reading distance; in dim spots, go a size up.
