Sound Horn Drive Slowly Sign in Manchester
An archway is a blind spot with walls. Nobody inside can see what is coming, and nobody approaching can see who is under it. A horn and a crawl solve both problems at the same time.

About this product
Mill courtyards in Mossley and the Tameside valleys of Greater Manchester
Many old textile mills are now split into business units: joiners, a brewery, a gym, a few studios. Vehicles reach the inner courtyard through an archway built for horse carts, barely wider than a van, with tenants and visitors walking through it too. A sign on each side of the arch, at the driver's eye level just before the entrance, sets the rule for everyone who comes in.
The arch has two sides
The mistake is signing only the outside, for drivers coming in. The tenant leaving the yard at the end of the day is just as blind, and just as likely to meet someone in the middle. Put a board on the courtyard side too. If people on foot regularly use the arch, give them a separate route or a door if the building allows. The landlord and the units' risk assessments decide how the access is managed.
Material and size
At an archway the sign is read from a short distance, so A3 (about 12 metres) or A2 is enough. 3mm Dibond screws to brick or stone and lasts years outside; 3.5mm Correx is a quick option while a permanent sign is agreed; 5mm Foamex suits a covered passage.
Prices from £26.55. The design is set; a mill or estate name can be added for £15 typesetting, and every file gets a free check from a person. Production takes 5 working days, then a tracked courier normally needs 1 to 3 working days. Delivery is £7.95 per order, free once goods reach £100. Collect from our Manchester office, Unit 3, 116 Bury New Road, M8 8EB, after our email if easier. More in speed limit signs.

What size should I order?
Pick a size people can read from where they will stand. As a cautious rule, using the distance-factor method in ISO 3864-1, allow roughly 1 metre of reading distance per 25 mm of sign height (measured on the shorter side). Check it against your own risk assessment.
| Size | Can be read from about |
|---|---|
| A3 (297 × 420 mm) | 12 m |
| A2 (420 × 594 mm) | 17 m |
| A1 (594 × 841 mm) | 24 m |
Good lighting stretches the reading distance; in dim spots, go a size up.
