Close to the work, and temporary

A local holding area is a shelf, a trolley or a taped square at the edge of a cell. Operators tag something during a sort, put it there, and the team leader reviews it at the end of the shift or week. Anything still undecided moves to the central area. Because it sits right next to the work, people read it from a few metres away, so A4 is usually enough.

Think of a food packaging plant in Ashton-under-Lyne with four lines, each with its own local area. Stick an A4 vinyl sign to the side of a steel trolley so the holding area can move when the line is reset. Use Foamex on a wall-mounted shelf. Dibond is only worth it if the cell is in a cold, damp loading area.

Pick a size people can read from where they will stand. As a cautious rule, using the distance-factor method in ISO 3864-1, allow roughly 1 metre of reading distance per 25 mm of sign height (measured on the shorter side). Check it against your own risk assessment.
