About this product

Deciding what gets the foil

The most common mistake is foiling too much. A whole card in gold just reads as shiny. One element in gold reads as deliberate. Pick the thing you want remembered, usually a logo or a name, and foil only that.

Fine lines and very small text are risky in foil, because thin strokes can fill in. Keep foiled shapes reasonably bold and give them a little space from other printed areas.

A Hale interior designer might foil a monogram in copper on a dark front, with plain printed contact details on the back. Copper is warm and slightly craft-like; gold suits jewellers and wedding planners; silver sits cleanly on dark designs; red foil shows best against a pale card. Foil goes on the front only.

Building the foil artwork

Foil is not ink, so the press needs to know where it goes. Send a print-ready PDF with 3 mm bleed on every edge, plus a second layer or file in solid 100 % black marking the foil areas exactly. Anything black on that layer gets foil; anything else does not. If that sounds fiddly, ask us to set the foil layer up from your design.

A person on our team checks every upload free. Our design service can typeset your card for £15 or produce a design from your brief for £35 (one draft, two rounds of changes).

Stocks and finish for Manchester orders

Can I have foil on both sides?

No. Foil is applied to the front only. The back can still be printed in full colour.

Which foil shows up best on a dark card?

Silver and gold both read clearly against dark backgrounds. Red foil is better against a pale design, where its colour has something to contrast with.

Do I need special software for the foil layer?

Any design program that exports layered PDFs will do it, though our team can set the foil layer up for you if you send a normal file and tell us what should be foiled.

How long do foil cards take to get to Greater Manchester?
