About this product

A service yard behind shops in Walkden

Here is a familiar case: a parade of shops in Walkden shares a service yard at the back, used for bins and deliveries. Shoppers discover it is a handy short cut to the precinct and leave cars there for an hour. Delivery lorries then cannot reach the back doors and unload on the main road instead. An A2 Dibond "No Parking" sign at the yard entrance, readable from about 17 metres, and an A3 on the wall at the far end make the point at both ends.

A ban works better when there is somewhere else to go. If a public car park is close, a separate arrow sign pointing there takes the sting out of the refusal. Without an alternative, drivers tend to test the rule.

When a more specific sign works better

The plain sign does not say why, or who may park. If you need exceptions ("except residents"), a reason ("keep clear"), or a target audience ("subcontractors"), choose the wording that says so. Specific wording invites fewer arguments. On private land, signs are effectively the terms of use; if a parking company manages the site, check their wording first.

Pick a size people can read from where they will stand. As a cautious rule, using the distance-factor method in ISO 3864-1, allow roughly 1 metre of reading distance per 25 mm of sign height (measured on the shorter side). Check it against your own risk assessment.
